According to the Merriam-Webster dictionary, the first known use of the term was in 1928.
Sports cars may be spartan or luxurious, but high maneuverability and minimal weight are requisite. That they may be equipped for racing, "especially an aerodynamically shaped one-passenger or two-passenger vehicle having a low center of gravity and steering and suspension suitable for precise control at high speeds.
The definition of a sports car is not precise, but from the first first automobiles "people have found ways to get them to go faster, round sides better, and look more beautiful" than the regular models inspiring an "emotional relationship" with a car that is fun to drive and use in the interest of driving. The basis for the sports car is traced to the early on 20th century touring automobiles and roadsters. These raced in early rallys, including the Herkomer Cup, Prinz-Heinrich-Fahrt, and Monte Carlo.
Though the term sports car would not be coined until after World War A single, the first sports vehicles are considered to be the 3 litre 1910 Prince Henry (Prinz Heinrich) Vauxhall 20 hp (tax rating) and the 27/80PS Austro-Daimler designed by Ferdinand Porsche.
